Radius Measurement After Deburring and Edge Rounding Sheet Metal Parts
Initial Situation
Shearing or laser cutting processes for metal parts often leave burr traces on the surface. This is the case with all sheet metal parts for example steel, stainless steel or aluminum. In order to limit this type of irregularity, several burr standards have been defined by end-users of metal sheets. Additionally, burrs can end up in injuries or entail problems, paint and coating also adhere much better to products with a good radius. For these reasons, Q-Fin Quality Finishing has installed a Quelltech radius measurement tool in their laboratory in Bergeijk, The Netherlands.
#QuellTech Solution
The robustness of a manual inspection cannot be compared with the speed and the repeatability of a 2D profile inspection by means of a contactless QuellTech Q4 laser scanner. In addition to the verification with respect to burrs and radius, QuellTech decided to fit a circle to the edge to see whether metal sheets still preserve their original form after deburring operation. This means that our inspection covers two tasks at the same time. -
Automated Quality Control for Pipeline Construction in Oil and Gas Industry
The rugged laser measuring equipment of QuellTech GmbH offers implementation of high-speed, contact-free inspection procedures even in a fully automated run. Weld seams can be optically examined to 100% giving a visual record. This includes parametric defect highlighting for automatic pass/fail results with live and post-weld measurement for weld defect criteria, HiLo and re-entrant angle. Pipe end bevels can be inspected in full while simultaneously measuring the ovality, generating fit-up sequencing and external Hilo analysis to reduce time, wastage and improve the integrity of the welds. This information is combined with the internal weld scan as a complete package of data for each weld. The QuellTech laser sensor family Q4 or Q5 used for these tasks is generally mounted on an arm of a rotational axis, to scan along the complete 360° angle of the internal surface in a sequence of strips. The Q4 sensors can also be used to control the weld seam tracking itself for rapid setup and ease of use. Even during a project, the range and scope of the Q Series sensor demonstrate the advantages of a modular system to quickly adapt to project needs, where the smallest system has provided a fast analysis of pipes as small as 105mm. The low power, with standard communication protocols, enable battery-powered systems to transmit wireless data to other systems for review and cloud back up. -

Newly Produced Rubber Layers (for Tires) Inspection
The client is one of the oldest tire manufacturers in the world. He is preparing a quality improvement for some of his production lines and establishes a fully automatic process. One of the corresponding tasks refers to the preproduction phase, in which an inspection of the depth of the tread grooves, the height of the adjacent peaks and their lateral distance to certain reference lines of the rubber layers take place. The quality of the products until now was dependent on manual inspections of workers.
Newly produced rubber layers are not easy to inspect by laser scanners since the black surface is highly light-absorbing, so requires lots of light power. For this reason, a laser scanner with a powerful light source is imperative.
A high-resolution QuellTech 2D/3D Q5-240 Laser Scanner proved to be adequate for this project. It is placed over a continuously running conveyer belt. The efficient QuellTech measurement software is integrated as well. It is used for the detection of coordinates of the base of the tread grooves and the peaks. After completion of each 2D profile measurement, coordinates are calculated, and results are sent to PLC. -

Glowing Cast Width and Height Measurement
Application Report:
Measuring Height and Width of Glowing Steel Castings
Initial Situation
We received an order from one of the biggest steel manufacturers in the world, which offers material for civil construction, automotive, industrial, agriculture applications and various other sectors. The customer intends to achieve an automatic 100% measurement of height and width of glowing elements produced in his continuous casting line, with an accuracy level in the range of mm. Until now, this dangerous task was carried out by employees wearing protective clothing with manual measurement tools like caliper.
Particular Challenge
The laser scanners have to be operated in an extremely hot environment and are subjected to considerable thermal radiation arising from the cast parts. Therefore, they have to be cooled down by a water-based cooling system and covered with insulating material.
QuellTech Solution
This task is a typical application of the high-resolution QuellTech 2D/3D Q5-880 Blue Laser Scanners. Two of these units are placed at the left and at the right of the measuring objects, at a defined inclination angle. Blue laser light in this case is a prerequisite, as the cast parts are red-hot, hence emitting in the red spectral range. Additionally, the client was in need of a software solution for the project, so a 3D point cloud processing application was implemented, performing inline and evaluating width, height and angle results.
Result for the Client
With this QuellTech solution, the customer is able to inspect continuously the product quality, simultaneously avoiding scrap. He uses the same system for more than 10 different types of castings. Errors caused by manual inspection are considerably reduced, and safety for personnel is enhanced. -

Weld Seam Tracking with Robot Welding
Robotized welding machines are getting more and more used by customers worldwide. The growing demand for increased Productivity, consistent quality is growing which makes Robot welding mandatory in many applications. However, in robot welding, there is a weld path programmed into the robot before welding, which then is used on all parts which have to be welded. Due to the tolerances of the parts, this path may vary from part to part. Another effect comes from thermal expansion of the weld material during welding, which leads to warping of the materials and therefore a new position of the weld seam. -
