Initial situation:

Pin Alignment Inspection

Client is producing electric assemblies with large connectors. The pins on these connectors need to be inspected for their position in height in the x-y-plane.  Today, customer uses 2D Cameras to measure y-x position only.

Particular challenges

The 2D Camera cannot measure the height position in z of the pins. The pins tips are tipped sharply and often do not have the highest point in the middle of the pin. The pins produce unwanted reflections.

QuellTech solution

Contactless QuellTech Q5 Laser Scanner can achieve this task with a high repeatability and speed and the help of the QuellTech 3D Vision software. The Scanner has to be positioned slightly angled to the surface  to avoid unwanted reflections. The acquired pointcloud is cleared of outliers and a reference datum plane is isolated from the pointcloud of the object.  The position of each pin top is calculated and compared against a tolerance envelope.  Any one pin exceeding this tolerance envelope will lead to a NOT-OK output of the QuellTech 3D Vision software.
